Description

Golden Hour is an original 20 x 24 x 1.5 in painting built from leather made from 5 invasive carp, mounted on a cradled board and finished in a 1/4 inch white floating frame. It was the very first invasive carp painting I ever made, and as far as I know, the first fine artwork created on invasive carp leather, a new kind of surface where the ecological story is embedded in the material itself.

The piece is an ode to that luminous moment just before sunset, when light turns liquid and the world feels set aglow. Fluorescent pinks, oranges, and yellow-oranges radiate across the surface, layered with pearlescent pink and gold pigment that catches the light as you move through the room. From a distance it reads like warm waves, sparkling and serene. The pearlescent pigments shift subtly with the light, and the color is even more alive in person.

Up close, the carp leather reveals its own architecture, recessed scale pockets filled with vibrant sky blue, like the inside of a breaking wave. Carp were introduced into the Mississippi River system in the 1970s and have been quietly overwhelming native waterways ever since. Collectors who choose work made from this material help create demand for fishers and processors removing carp, supporting river recovery through the purchase itself.
