Small Studio Work on invasive lionfish leather

Awakening began as an experiment and ended up becoming the start of my current style.
This piece is part of a four-work study where I first tried cutting invasive lionfish leather into small tiles and building a painting like a mosaic. Each square holds its own natural scale texture, so the surface shifts as you move around it. I airbrushed acrylic and pearlescent, metallic pigments across the leather, creating a soft sheen that feels a little like light on Caribbean water.
The color drifts from deep blue into sea green, like looking down through clear ocean layers. It is small, but it has presence. The texture does a lot of the talking.
What it’s made of, and why it matters
This painting is made from the leather of invasive lionfish removed from Caribbean reefs. Lionfish eat the juvenile reef fish that help keep algae in check, and without those young fish, reefs can suffocate. Removing lionfish from invaded reefs is one of the most effective local ways for easing pressure on reef fish communities and supporting coral reef health.
