You Could Stay

DESCRIPTION

You Could Stay is not a painting of a specific Caribbean place. It’s the feeling of being out on clear water under an open sky, when the air softens, the horizon opens, and time seems to loosen its grip.

There’s a question inside the image: are you moving toward the island, circling around it, or looking back as you leave? The longer you stay with it, the less it resolves into one answer. It becomes a pause, a moment to breathe, a place the viewer can enter and make their own.

The surface is built from 58 invasive lionfish skins, cut and arranged by hand onto a cradled wood panel. From a distance, the painting reads as atmosphere. Up close, the irregular edges and scale textures reveal the material beneath the calm.

Those lionfish were once a threat to the Caribbean reefs that inspired the work. Each fish removed helps reduce pressure on native reef life, especially the young grazers that keep algae in check. The material was part of the problem. In this painting, it becomes part of the solution.
